THIS was food fit for royalty.

Generous portions and genuinely friendly staff made our visit to the King Charles II Restaurant in Friar Street, Worcester, more than worthwhile.

From beginning to end, our meal was a pleasure.

Steeped in history, King Charles House is a city landmark. In 1651, a beaten Charles II, fearing for his life after losing the Battle of Worcester, escaped from the black and white building and began his famous journey to exile in France.

Today, the oak panelled house is a warm, welcoming restaurant; infused with history, but firmly in the 21st-century.

Inside on a Saturday night, the atmosphere was vibrant and we were ready for a feast.

In awe of the mouthwatering menu, I wanted to try everything –parsnip and gruyere bake; whole, grilled Dover sole, steak diane, duck with plum and ginger glaze, tagliatelle carbonara.

After much ‘umming’, ‘arring’ and licking of lips I opted for melon and parma ham (£5.95) to start. It was just right; light and chilled.

My friend devoured his stilton stuffed mushrooms (£4.95). Coated in batter and deep fried in rich, port mayonnaise the heavy starter was heaven for a foodie who likes strong flavours.

For my main course, I chose beef wellington (£18.50). Recommended by our waiter, this dish was divine.

Topped with smooth pate, the meltin- the-mouth beef was encased in a puff pastry parcel. The sheer size meant the dish met with appreciative ‘ooohs’ as it reached our table – and deservedly so. I struggled to finish and, much to my dismay, could not manage a pudding.

My friend’s saltimbocca alla Romana (£15.45) was smaller, but no less impressive. The tender veal was pink and delicate, and complemented by the marsala sauce.

Staff at the King Charles should be proud of what they have achieved in this corner of historic Worcester.

Quality and quantity, professional service and a welcoming atmosphere – it was hard to find fault. And, while it was not cheap at £54.85 for two, it was worth every penny.
