A MAN stole meat because he owed a drug dealer money, a court heard.
Former drug user David Wright took £10 of bacon from Iceland in Evesham on Thursday, December 4.
The 29-year-old, who was released from prison six weeks earlier, hid the meat in his jacket, but was caught by staff he tried to leave the store.
Louise Mead, prosecuting at Worcester Magistrates Court, said: “He fully admitted theft in interview. He said he owed somebody £30 and had been threatened with violence if the debt wasn’t paid.”
David Taylor, prosecuting, said his client was “essentially told to steal by another man who was a drug dealer” and was now changing his lifestyle, quitting illegal street drugs and hoping to rekindle a relationship with his young son.
“This is just a snapshot of the problems this man has,” said Mr Taylor.
The bench ordered Wright to carry out 60 hours unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order. He was also made subject to a drug rehabilitation requirement and told to pay £60 court costs.
