SIR – I am extremely concerned to read of the city council’s proposed plans within Worcester’s museum and galleries to move exhibitions from Foregate Street to the Guildhall. Does this spell the end for Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery?

While the Guildhall is a fine building and could certainly be transformed into an excellent art gallery and exhibition space I’m sure this is not part of the council’s plans.

For several years I have heard that the library would be vacating the ground floor area allowing the art gallery to expand and develop in line with similar city art galleries across the country. It appears to me that along with the proposed development of the University of Worcester’s ‘super library’, the museum and art gallery on the Foregate site could be heading towards the same fate as the Post Office building just the other side of the railway tracks. How long before the museum site is up for sale and under development?

Other than the museum and art gallery the cathedral is often used to display art work. We have one artist-led independent space with the Pitt, curated by Nathaniel Pitt. If you know of any other public art spaces do let me know.

Should the seemingly doomed museum and art gallery disappear what does the future hold for contemporary art in Worcester?
