A 15-YEAR-OLD youth who admitted being part of a nasty affray in which an MP was left beaten and bloody has been ordered to pay his victims £125 compensation.

He had already pleaded guilty to affray at a previous hearing at Worcester Magistrates Court before appearing for sentencing at a city youth court yesterday. The defendant, who lives in Worcester, was part of a group of teenagers who attacked Plaid Cymru MP Adam Price as he carried balloons to a celebration party marking his parents’ golden wedding anniversary in the city on Saturday, October 25.

Mr Price and a friend were walking to Brown’s restaurant in South Quay at about 5pm when a female member of the group approached and asked if she could have one of the balloons.

Sally Hill, prosecuting said that on two occasions Mr Price politely refused her request. The defendant then approached the MP and asked for a balloon in a “threatening manner”.

Miss Hill said Mr Price, fearing a confrontation, told the youth to go away but the situation escalated and when he put his palm on to the chest of the 15-year-old, other male members of the group confronted the MP.

She said: “It was a nasty incident. Mr Price was physically assaulted. Another group member punched him in the face.”

Three of the group, including the defendant, went after a retreating Mr Price and his friend. They continued punching the pair before the incident finally ended.

Andy Childs, defending, said his client was of previous good character and pointed out that he “was not the main instigator”.

The youth was ordered to pay £43 costs, given a nine-month referral order and he must sign a good behaviour contract which if broken could take him back to court.

An application by your Worcester News to identify the teenager was turned down by magistrates.

Two men and another youth are due to appear before the city’s magistrates in connection with the incident on Friday, February 27.
