St. John's Townswomen's Guild

AT the January meeting we were again visited by J Walton from the King’s School. This time he told us about the journey he took to Peru with 28 students and eight adults in 2007.

As he described the journey, he showed us some beautiful slides of the areas through which they travelled. They spent some days in an isolated village using traditional methods to cook over a wood fire, and using a very limited range of receptacles and utensils. A crew of local Peruvians looked after the horses and donkeys that were needed to carry all the camping gear. In the village the girls learned to card and spin the alpaca wool, and then weave it into the traditional designs for hats, skirts, cloaks and blankets.

During the journey, they found the locals very friendly and enjoyed many spontaneous football matches, feasts and dances. They visited the ancient Inca village of Machu Picchu, and learned more about the ancient history of the area. Mr Walton brought examples of the beautiful clothes woven from the alpaca wool, which were extremely warm to wear.

The next meeting of the guild will be on Thursday, February 19, at 7.30pm in Bromyard Road Methodist Church Hall when Ellie Targett will give a talk entitled My Norwegian Father. Visitors are most welcome to join us.
