Support group for Asperger's sufferers

A MAN recently diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome at the age of 31 has set up a group in Worcester to help others with the condition.

The syndrome is a disorder related to autism which affects the sufferer’s ability to communicate and socialise, restricts their imagination and can cause difficulties with physical co-ordination.

Now a 31-year-old man from Worcestershire, who has asked not to be named, has set up the Asperger’s Awareness Campaign to help people in the county who have the disorder, as well as their friends and families, who are also affected.

The man was only diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in December last year, by specialists at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

The diagnosis followed an attempt on his own life when he became depressed, partly because of frustration with his condition.

He said: “There are many, many people like me in society. Many people go through their lives without ever receiving a diagnosis. This is a life-long condition.

“Many, like myself, will probably have struggled at school, some being labelled as ‘naughty’ and never receiving the help they so required from the education system.”

The reason the man does not want to be named is the fear of being the centre of attention, which is part and parcel of the disorder.

He decided to set up the group because he believes that there is not enough support for adults with Asperger’s syndrome.

The inaugural meeting of the group is at the Slug and Lettuce pub at The Cross in Worcester city centre on Saturday, April 4, from 7pm until late. The venture has been backed by Autism West Midlands.

A permanent venue for the monthly meetings has yet to be found but the organiser hopes it will be a monthly meeting for socialising and discussing the challenges posed by the condition for the sufferers and their family and friends.

So far, 60 people have already expressed an interest in the group.

Because numbers are limited, those who want to attend the social event at the pub should call 0800 4118240.

Aspergers is the correct spelling. This isn't a dyslexia group!
