My dad is 90 and he’s getting baptised

A 90-YEAR-OLD man is to be christened in a touching ceremony arranged by his family.

Trevor Williams, a great-great-grandfather, is to be baptised at the South Hayes Residential Home, London Road, Worcester, on Sunday surrounded by his family and friends.

His son Brian, aged 64, from Bridgend, said: “He took me to one side at Christmas and said, ‘I’ve got something to tell you – I haven’t been christened’.

“He’s getting to the end of his life and when he gets something into his head he has to do it.

“I’m delighted about it. It’ll be an occasion; all the family will be there.”

Retired priest Rev Jenny Hayward, who works part-time at South Hayes, will be taking the St David’s Day service and was approached about the christening by the family.

She said she has needed special permission from the Diocese of Worcester.

“I was offered the facilities at St Martin’s Church in London Road, but Trevor preferred to have it at the care home so we’ve got the mobile font,” she said.

“It will be a slightly shortened service. It’s very unusual to have a christening at his age.

“He’s very Welsh and a delightful man.”

Mr Williams, who came from a family of four brothers and four sisters, was born in Pontypridd, South Wales, in April 1918. Two of his siblings died at a young age, but his surviving sisters went into nursing and all of his brothers followed their father into the mines.

Mr Williams, however, worked in a butchers and a cobblers and trained as an engineer before moving to Worcester, initially St John’s, to find work.

His employers included Windshields, Metal Constructions and Heenan & Froude, and he made ammunition boxes at Metal Box following the outbreak of the Second World War.

Twice married, he had three children by his first wife – David, Brian and Glenys – and outlived his second wife Mary Davey, whom he married in the 1980s.

He met her through a classified advert she placed in the then Worcester Evening News in the 1980s. She died in 1992.

He has three children, seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, and is stepfather to his late wife’s family, including daughter Christine Reece, of Littleworth, Norton, who said she was “looking forward” to the service.

His children have since left Worcester and live in a variety of locations, including Stourport, South Wales and New Zealand.
