Firefighters pour cold water on smoking

FIREFIGHTERS in Worcester are urging smokers to kick the habit by supporting this year’s National No Smoking day.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is supporting No Smoking Day 2009 and giving smokers plenty of reasons to quit on Wednesday.

Smouldering cigarettes are a common cause of accidental house fires, responsible for one death and 11 injuries across the two counties in the past two years.

Smokers struggling to give up are being told to ‘put it out, right out’ after finishing a cigarette.

A spokesman for the service, said: “People shouldn’t under estimate the dangers associated with smoking in the home if cigarettes aren’t properly extinguished.

“There are also risks as a parent, grandparent or carer if lighters or matches are kept in your home with children around.

“The economic price of a house fire is immense and you can’t put a cost on the lives of loved ones. I would encourage smokers to give up this No Smoking Day.”
