TK Maxx heading for Worcester

THE empty Woolworths store in Worcester’s High Street is to be turned into a TK Maxx.

Your Worcester News can exclusively reveal the retailer, which sells designer and high street brands of womenswear, menswear, homeware, gifts and accessories at discounted prices, will soon be opening its first store in the south of the county.

Workers have been busy sprucing up the inside of the empty shop over the last couple of days and Worcester City Council’s planners confirmed that they have just received an application from TJX Europe – the parent company of TK Maxx. It only relates to lighting, though, because the shop does not require a change of use.

The news is a massive boost to Worcester after Woolworths, which had been trading in the city for more than 100 years, shut its doors in January – a closure that cost more than 90 people their jobs and left a gaping hole in the High Street.

A TK Maxx spokesman told your Worcester News: “We are planning on opening a store in Worcester but we are looking at the store probably not opening until towards the end of the summer.”

The spokesman said they did not have any specific details on what products the store would sell or how many jobs would be created.

Adrian Field of VisitWorcester, the company responsible for tourism, events and city centre management, said it was “great news” such a prominent, large shophad been filled.

“Their investment will increase the numbers of people coming into the city centre to shop and so help other businesses as well,” he said.

“It will also create more employment opportunities, which is great news at present.”

TK Maxx currently has stores in Kidderminster and Redditch, but Worcester is listed on its website as one of the places it has been looking at in recent times.

There were rumours TK Maxx was interested in the former Sainsbury’s store in Cathedral Plaza when the supermarket giant closed there in April 2007.

Cathedral Plaza manager John Kendrick said a deal on that unit was nearing completion.

“We are hopeful that we are going to make an announcement very soon but in the current economic climate, and with two big units, it is good to have one confirmation and one about to be confirmed,”

he said.

oh come on at least they are doing something with it. The empty shop looks terrible and jobs will be created.
Why does everyone jump on the negative all the time?

Mort, i dont.. it will create job's yeh but i just think a "better" shop could of gone there.. the two other TK Max shops ive been to are like primark, cheap and nasty and normally clothes all over the floor.. i hope they dont follow in the same direction.

I would of like to seen a market there.. or.. a bigger store for a clothes shop like bank or republic.. or HMV should of got it as it gets cramped in there as it is!!

Yeh..HMV would be my choice.

End of the day.. as long as it stays..more jobs for a few people

What people might wish to consider is that like the shop or not, TKMaxx will attract more people to the City Centre which has to be a good thing.

The number of empty shops seems to grow weekly so a large bustling store such as this will fill a large, very prominent vacant space!

It will create jobs for local people, perhaps even for ex Woolies staff so this is an excellent thing surely!

As for it only being 'Chavs' who shop there - well you'd be surprised at the clientele it attracts. Many of my friends and colleagues shop in the ones in Birmingham and Redditch and teenagers we are not!!

Of course Woolworths patrons where the cream of worcestershire society! I think this is great news and great for the Worcester high street which is looking a little threadbare at the moment!

Although never having been in a TKMaxx store it's still good news instead of a vacant high street store, and jobs of course. But would like to see a Wilkinsons Store in Worcester. The one in Droitwich is really good, and the Gloucester store is huge.

without sounding too sad i've heard Wilkinson's but never been so would be good to see something new in Worcester whatever it might be

Great, another cheap and tacky shop with clothes stuffed on rails with little or no organisation. Worcester really needs to improve its quality of high-street clothes shops it has because until it does I'll continue to shop at Cheltenham!

Anything is better than an empty store and such a large space could have potentially been empty for a long time in these recession times. I am not a great fan of TX Maxx personally as it seems to me that the reason that the stuff is in the shop is because no-one wanted it in the first place so why would I want to buy it now?! However having seen some town centres devastated by shop closures I think we should be grateful that we can still attract big names to Worcester.
