YOUNG people in the two counties are being asked to help keep the ‘roar of the rainforest’ alive by raising funds for a wildlife charity.
National bird charity the RSPB has launched its 2009 youth fundraiser to help save rainforest animals in Sumatra and Indonesia, and now young people in Herefordshire and Worcestershire are being asked to hold sponsored events to help out.
The Indonesian Government has given the RSPB and two of its partners - Burung Indonesia and BirdLife International – a 100-year lease to look after part of the Sumatran rainforest and its wildlife.
The area, two-thirds the size of greater London, is home to a stunning array of birds and wildlife including the rhinoceros hornbill, the Sumatran tiger - one of the world's rarest mammals - and the sun bear, which is the world’s smallest bear.
Andy Simpson, RSPB head of youth and education, said: “The money raised through the appeal will go towards buying trees grown by local villagers - helping both people and wildlife.
“It costs £20 to plant 40 trees for rainforest animals so any money raised, from 20p to £20, will help save these amazing animals.”
Everyone who raises money for the appeal will get a certificate and a set of special stickers.
