Ace rower Scott is laid to rest

HUNDREDS of mourners packed into a Worcestershire abbey filled with 2,012 daffodils for the funeral of an Olympic gold medal rowing hopeful who died suddenly during a training session.

Pall-bearers wearing rowing blazers carried the coffin of Scott Rennie – a former head boy at the King’s School, Worcester – into Pershore Abbey while coaches from as far away as Molesey Boat Club travelled to yesterday’s funeral.

About 400 people attended the service.

Kim Crawford – the wife of the abbey’s Reverend Kenneth Crawford, sung in the choir and performed a duet at the end of the funeral.

She said: “It was very sad, very moving, but also very uplifting.”

A large gathering to celebrate Scott’s life followed in his home village of Great Comberton, near Pershore.

We previously reported in your Worcester News how the talented 25-year-old, nicknamed Big Ren, was training hard when he collapsed and died suddenly during a training session on Friday, March 6.

He had aspirations of getting into the rowing squad for the London 2012 Olympic Games and was tipped by many to win gold.

In a statement on the King’s School, Worcester, website headteacher Tim Keyes said: “We remember him as a delightful boy, a good friend to many in his year, an outstanding head of school and someone who was likely to excel in whatever he decided to do in life.”
