Ferret tags will keep you together

The RSPCA in the West Midlands is urging ferret owners to get their pets microchipped after finding an increased number of straying ferrets are being picked up throughout the region.

In the past week Animal Collection Officer (ACO) Suzie Smith has had five separate calls about ferrets on the loose.

“In the eight years I have worked for the RSPCA I have only ever picked up one microchipped ferret,” she said.

“Ferrets are renowned for being energetic, curious with a love of playing hide and seek so anyone who owns a ferret should ensure their pet is chipped for piece of mind.

“We have a real problem with straying ferrets at the moment which could be partly to do with the breeding season.

"We are receiving calls about straying ferrets every week and when they are not chipped we have no way of reunited missing pet and owner."

I wouldn't microchip my ferret even if I had one... no one has a ferret. Well, maybe 5 people did before but I think they must have run away.

Ferrets. What a joke of an article.

cheersforthat - how little you know. Ferrets are rapidly becoming one of the top 5 companion animals in the UK. There is a need for animal microchipping no matter what the species. Considerate ownership covers a multitude of aspects and chippin gis only one of them

Well said, 5degrees! Ferrets are very beautiful & friendly. They make wonderful companions.I have had my male ferret 'Bertie' for 6 years now. He answers to his name, and makes the whole family laugh with his hilarious antics. They love human company and you can often hear them 'laughing' when they are happy and enjoying themselves. As long as they are in a very secure cage and run,(they are experts at escapology)they are not a problem. The ones that are found roaming are unfortunately, ferrets that are used for 'rabbiting' and have escaped before their owners can catch them after they've chased a rabbit out of the burrow. This practise goes on a lot.But as a normal pet, they are a wonderful animal.
