I didn't expect all this - MP Luff

BELEAGUERED Worcestershire MP Peter Luff has told your Worcester News he simply did not anticipate the media storm which exploded yesterday over his expenses claims.

The Conservative member for Mid-Worcestershire insists he has “a clear conscience” over the catalogue of second home claims listed in your Worcester News and the Daily Telegraph, which made national headlines throughout the day and saw camera crews parked outside his city home. Mr Luff has been criticised for claiming multiple household items for his second home over the past four years, as well as refurbishing both his house in Worcester and his London flat.

There is no suggestion he broke parliamentary rules, but he has offered to pay back a £3,000 redecoration bill.

Speaking exclusively yes- terday to your Worcester News, Mr Luff was asked if he had expected the dreaded call from the Telegraph.

He said: “I didn’t. I had such a clear conscience. But obviously my judgement was wrong, which unnerves me.

“I think I hadn’t appreciated the extent to which the public mood had moved on, and things that would have been tolerated even two or three months ago are now considered not tolerable.

“I think it’s totally right that people judge revelations of today by the standards of today. But I think if I had published this as I went along – as I often thought of doing – I wouldn’t be in the difficulty I’m in today.”

Mr Luff declined to comment on each individual claim he made, but did explain spending almost £1,000 of taxpayers’ money on two sets of china over the four-year period.

He said: “I had used my own china for about 14 years, with no charges to public funds. Eventually I had to buy a new set.

“We bought one and it was inappropriate. It didn’t fit the cupboards, didn’t fit the dishwasher – it was a mistake. So we replaced it So that’s 14 years, two sets of china.”

Asked if he thought the china claims looked bad in retrospect, Mr Luff said: “I do. It’s been picked up by a number of people and.. yes I do.”

Describing the Telegraph coverage as “horrid”, Mr Luff reiterated that “the main allegation” made against him – that he ‘flipped’ his second home designation simply so he could furnish both homes at the taxpayers’ expense – is “absolutely untrue”.

He said: “That’s the major misrepresentation in the piece.”

The MP produced documents showing he became a parliamentary ‘office-holder’ in July 2002 when given the job of Conservative assistant chief whip, requiring him to make his London address his main home. He reverted back when he lost the job in June 2005.

The Tory MP has declined to follow the lead of county MPs Mike Foster and Richard Taylor and turn his expenses forms over to the local press for full publication and analysis. He said: “I’m disappointed I can’t – I had hoped to do so. But until my own party’s (investigation) process has concluded, I’ve been strongly advised I should not.”

Some of Mr Luff's claims

Selection of Mr Luff's second home expenses claims over four years, as listed in the Daily Telegraph: Kitchen table and six chairs – £1,583 (£750 paid out by fees office); TV – £750 Microwave – £218.99; China set – £625; China set – £367; Mattress – £675; DVD player – £224.99; Radio – £148; Clock radio – £116.99; Bedside light, alarm clock radio – £246.75; Chest of drawers – £725; Set of sofas, tables and pouffe – £1,774; Vacuum cleaner – £194.37; Vacuum cleaner – £139; Highgrove bedside chest – £144.93; Dining room table, four chairs, bar stool – £596; Carpet – £1,589.93.

Of the china he says:-
He said: “I had used my own china for about 14 years, with no charges to public funds. Eventually I had to buy a new set.

“We bought one and it was inappropriate. It didn’t fit the cupboards, didn’t fit the dishwasher – it was a mistake. So we replaced it So that’s 14 years, two sets of china.”

Nobody asked you to use your own China, that was your choice. It is not wholly necessary for you to drink out of china cups or eat off china plates to perform your duties as an MP. Most of us when we sent our kids to live away at university went to places like Argos for tableware, not the china shop.

Secondly, even if we accepted that the first set was to replace your own, why should the taxpayer pay for yet a second one solely because of your poor choice for the first one. Your mistake, your problem.

Like a lot of other MP's, you are in a big hole regarding your expenses and seem to be trying to frantically dig yourself out whilst just getting deeper in it. It's not working so it might be best to just stop digging you know.

"There is no suggestion he broke parliamentary rules"

Oh yes there is. Read the Green Book carefully, it's there in black and white:

"Claims must only be made for expenditure that it was necessary for a Member to incur to ensure that he or she could properly perform his or her parliamentary duties."

"The requirement of ensuring value for money is central in claiming for accommodation, goods or services – Members should avoid purchases which could be seen as extravagant or luxurious."

Look at the expenses you have listed, then look at the prices in your local town-centre catalogue store.

He's in clear breach of the rules.

It just goes to show how out of touch Mr Luff and the rest of them are and now they are getting a lesson of life in the 'real' world.

It is possible to compare Mr. Luff's claims with those of Michael Foster, why don't some of you do that. You will find that in the last financial year, Michael Foster claimed over £3,000 more for his second home than Peter Luff.
Perhaps we can have the spotlight on Mr Foster because living in his constituency I would like to know before I vote.

I suppose we'll have to wait for the Daily Telegraph for the full details BarryB on Mr Foster.

Mr Foster has made a lot of profit by his own admission, on property paid for by the taxpayer so as far as I am concerned he won't get my vote, not that he would have got it anyway.

Incredible!!! Absolutely incredible!!! This, yet again, just shows how out of touch Peter Luff is with the electorate and general public. And still, he doesn't get it! If he 'got it' he would return ALL the money he has claimed from the 2nd homes expenses system, he would resign as an MP, and he would apologise unreservedly to the public. Peter Luff is now a liability for the Conservative Party. The Conservatives won't have a chance in hell of winning this seat if Peter Luff is still their representative at the next election. Other political parties have also got liabilities and need to persuade current MPs that have had their snouts in the trough to step aside for the sake of the general public, for British politics and for their Political Party. Time for Peter Luff to resign!

Julie Kirkbride total expenses £147,165, 2nd home = £23083

Sir Michael Spicer total expenses £109,208, 2nd home = £21162

Jacqui Smith total expenses £157,631, 2nd home £22948

Michael Foster total expenses £154,548, 2nd home £22847

Peter Luff total expenses £139,015, 2nd home £19694

Am not condoning what Peter has / hasn't bought, and I am not a "tory" (have a look at my comments on the Bromsgrove Advertiser website re Julie Kirkbride and husband double claiming) but why is the MP with the lowest 2nd home allowance out of ALL main party MPs (who ALL live in Worcs), getting vilified the most???????

Helen

The answer to your question is that his purchases are not for a flat in London, but his own home. Who buys china sets to use living on your own during the working week in Westminster? We know you are a Peter fan, I'm not anti-Peter, but I see this for what it is. Why can't you?

Oh Luffy, what a complete and utter plank you are. Didn't expect all this fuss? Have the Barons in the Balcony been upset by the peasants in the pits? Shocking about the china - My Goodness love that really is way more important than crime prevention, road safety and that numpty nonsense. Pray God you stocked up on Y fronts before all this fuss. whatever next? Will you be required to do a days work?!

trcole, I will go along with petitions etc. In fact I was thinking the same thing when I saw the one in Bromsgrove for Jule Kirkbride. An excellent way of bringing our concerns to notice as long as it is even handed. I am a bit past this sort of thing myself but why doesn't someone set up a petition with regard to Michael Foster outside the Guildhall in Worcester. What is good for the goose is also good for the gander. There is nothing to choose between anyone of them personally or partywise though some try to make this a party issue by only coming down on one MP when, with few exceptions, they were all at it.

Does it really matter who claimed the most or who bought what?

Is it not the case that whatever they have claimed or bought, if claims were not wholly necessary for them to be able to perform their duties then they have broken the rules.

Whatever the amounts claimed wrongly are, each gives rise to a loss of trust in them. For instance, is a thief who nicks 20 grand any different to one who nicks only 2 quid. Surely they would both have shown themselves to be thieves and untrustworthy. Surely the point is do we want MP's who cannot be trusted?
