THERE is no shortage of doom and gloom around at the moment what with the recession, the scandalous behaviour of Britain’s MPs and the continuing conflict in Afghanistan.

So it is a real pleasure to be able to report some genuinely good news today.

Dines Green Primary School in Worcester, as its head teacher Stephen Gough acknowledges today, has suffered from a particularly negative image in recent years. Labelled as a failing school, it was placed on special measures in 1997 and 2002. Many schools do not recover from such actions by government inspectors. All too often special measures are a precursor to closure.

The teachers, pupils, parents and governors of Dines Green, however, have bucked the trend.

They have put their heads down, worked hard, and shown impressive levels of determination and fortitude.

And now they have their reward. The school’s second inspection since it came out of special measures in 2006 now ranks the school as “good”. It is a short word but it represents a giant leap for Dines Green.

Mr Gough knows there is still work to be done at the school but he and everyone else involved at Dines Green deserve the congratulations of the community.

It can be too easy to concentrate on the negative aspects of our public services. When something good happens it often fails to make the headlines.

Something good has happened at Dines Green Primary School. And that is why it makes our front page today.
