THE new Mayor of Worcester will officially be welcomed into the city’s most privileged civic position at a grand ceremony this weekend.

Councillor Andy Roberts will take part in Worcester’s annual Civic Service this Sunday, beginning at 10.10am with a procession from the city’s Guildhall to the Cathedral, where the service will begin at 10.30am.

The Mayor and Mayoress will be accompanied by various former Mayors of Worcester and Mayors and chairmen from 14 neighbouring local authorities, along with the Honorary Recorder and representatives from the police and fire service.

City community groups, clubs, charities, schools and businesses have all been invited to send representatives to the service.

Coun Roberts said: “The last month has been enormously busy. I’ve been very touched by the huge efforts local people are making to improve our communities and raise funds for charities, in spite of the challenging economic climate.

“Worcester not only has a fantastic heritage, it also has great future ahead – I look forward to supporting all those who are working to make sure that it does.”

Invited guests will return to the Guildhall for refreshments following the service. Tradition dictates the Mayor will also offer his guests a glass of beer – this year a barrel has been donated by the Malvern Hill Brewery.

Members of the public wishing to attend the service should take their seats in the Cathedral by 10.05am.
