A WORCESTER author enchanted schoolchildren when he visited a new library.

Pupils from the Fairfield Community Primary School in Brickfields were included in the opening of Warndon’s newest county library.

As part of the opening celebration, year one pupils were able to meet a published children’s author and illustrator.

Petr Horacek, author of about 20 children’s books, spent nearly an hour delighting the class with his stories and demonstrating his skill as an illustrator.

Children sat spell-bound as he showed them his sketch book of the first draft of Silly Suzy Goose and explained how the story was drafted.

They also had the opportunity to interview Mr Horacek, asking him questions about where he works, how old he was when he wrote his first book and his favourite story book.

He was also asked if he enjoyed it when he was at school as a child.

Fairfield School’s new headteacher, Justin Shiffmann, said he was delighted with the event and the opening of the centre’s library.

He said: “Our warmest thanks go to Petr Horacek for his time, kindness and for sharing his wonderful stories with our children.

“They are so enthusiastic about his stories and asked brilliant questions about how he writes.

“We are so lucky that the county council chose the Fairfield Centre as the location for this library.

“It is unusual for a school to be so close to such a facility, never mind in the same building!

“My staff are already ensuring that their classes are popping in for short sessions with the librarians to encourage as many children as possible to borrow books for home reading.”
