THE world’s most famous Wookiee has paid a visit to Worcester.

Star Wars actor Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the sci-fi franchise, made an appearance at movie memorabilia store Videodrome on Saturday.

The 7ft 3in tall former hospital worker, who was discovered by Star Wars writer and director George Lucas, met dozens of fans and talked about life inside the Chewbacca costume.

The signing was part of a Broad Street fun day organised by local independent traders.

Tim Evans, owner of Videodrome, said: “Peter lives in America now and he doesn’t often come over to the UK.

“He is only doing two signings this year – this and a film and comic convention at Earls Court – so it’s fantastic to have him here. He’s really popular. Even before he arrived the shop was crammed full of people.”

Mr Evans said the community fun day had been a big success. Independent traders taking part included His & Hers hair salon, Knowles Sports, Pura Beauty, Cash Concepts, Cotton Reels, Mediterranean Fish Bar and Sarah Ireland Bathrooms.
