Bridge work earns another gong for council

THE county council has scooped another award for the refurbishment of the 139-year-old Stourport Bridge.

Worcestershire County Council earned silver in the Green Apple Awards 2009 for the refurbishment works to the bridge in the category for built environment and architectural heritage - the sixth award the scheme has received.

An inspection in 2004 revealed major repairs were needed to the bridge, including work on the parapets, removal of the carriageway to enable the construction of a new reinforced concrete slab and the installation of a new waterproofing membrane.

The scheme was designed to prevent water seeping into the bridge structure and causing deterioration.

Repairs were also made to the cast iron features, as well as the repainting of the bridge and the heritage lighting columns.

Cast iron components which were beyond warrantable repair were recycled and used in the making of new castings, using age-old techniques dating back to the time the bridge was first built.

The work was completed at the end of 2007.

Councillor Derek Prodger, the county council’s cabinet member in charge of highways, said: “This is another excellent achievement. Our engineers have worked hard since the project first started in 2004.”

Richard Attwood, county council engineering project manager, added: “I am very pleased t the county council has been further recognised for their hard work to restore the historic Stourport Bridge, built in the pioneering era for the use of cast iron - the result is due to the dedication of the project delivery team.”
