Pupils mark school’s 150th birthday

A GROUP of budding historians stepped back in time to celebrate their school’s 150th birthday.

Pupils at Hanbury CE First School dressed in costumes that would make their Victorian forefathers proud when they spent a day learning what life was like in 1859.

As well as experiencing lessons 1850s style, pupils were able to try their hands at a raft of domestic tasks including brass polishing, washing, ironing and carpet beating.

Even playtime had a Victorian theme with traditional pursuits such as skittles, hopscotch, music hall singing, a coconut shy and hoops and sticks on offer.

“We wanted to celebrate our birthday in a way that everyone will remember for years to come,” said headteacher Andrew Payne.

“By giving children the opportunity to see how their ancestors lived, we can really bring history to life and have some fun at the same time.”
