City looks forward to flower show

GREEN-FINGERED residents, culinary wizards and budding gardeners have less than a week to enter the city’s flower show.

The annual Worcester City Flower Show starts in Cripplegate Park on Saturday, August 15, but needs more entries to make it an even bigger success than last year, say organisers.

With eight categories, there is plenty for young and old entrants to choose from.

This year also sees the return of the city’s silver cup which will go to Worcester’s top grower. It was last awarded in 1976.

With eight categories there is plenty for both the amateur and the journeyman to get their teeth into.

But as Linda Ohlson, event coordinator, said: “It’s not just about the flowers.

“There’s plenty of other activities and all the family will get something from the show.”

For youngsters and the young at heart there will be face-painting and a chance to look at miniature railway models. Stall-holders will sell a variety of wares and there will be a live brass band.

Budding gardeners can take advantage of the farmers’ market stalls.

Andy Roberts, city mayor, said: “It’s always very enjoyable and this year we have this fabulous cup to reward the winning gardener’s efforts.”

Entries should be delivered to the reception at Orchard House in Farrier Street by Monday. For details, call Mrs Ohlson on 01905 722233 or e-mail lohlson@worcester.gov.uk.

Categories: Flower, cactus, floral decoration/art, fruit and vegetable, cakes (pork pies, and preserves), handicraft, photography, and children’s section.
