It has become increasingly unnerving to be a cyclist on todays roads. I myself was recently hit by a van and now I expect to be hit each time a motor vehicle approaches from behind.

I know there has been lots of comment on the bad cyclists and the bad motorists and I can see both sides of the story as I am a cyclist and a motorist.

As a cyclist I would like to see motorists take a wider berth instead of squeezing by and if they have to squeeze by to do it at a slow speed. Although just to slow down when passing would constitute common courtesy.

Unless you have had a motor vehicle go past you at anything over 40 miles an hour and often way above this you will never be able to appreciate how frightening it is. If anyone is curious and wants a taste of it in relative safety, I suggest you stand on the footpath next to the stretch of road from Littleworth roundabout at St Peters up to the one at The Swan at Whittington and while there imagine being on the inside of the traffic riding a bike on the road while the motor vehicles boom by

I hope the cyclist is not too badly hurt or affected by this incident
