THE victim of a robbery armed himself with a homemade cosh in case of further attacks.

In August this year James Allen, of Hardwicke Close, St John’s, Worcester, was attacked by a group of Asian men and since then has feared for his safety at night.

On Sunday, September 20, he was stopped by police as he cycled through St Peter’s, Worcester. When he was searched the officers found a snooker ball in a sock hidden in his pocket.

The 20-year-old admitted possessing an offensive weapon when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court.

Sarah Stock, prosecuting, said: “When he was interviewed by police he told them he had been set upon by a group of Asian males and he wanted to be suitably armed.

“He was aware it was not lawful and said he would use it if needed.”

The college student was told he would escape a prison sentence but was warned about his actions by deputy district judge Graham Bennett.

Mr Bennett said: “A sock with a snooker ball attached to it in case you need to defend yourself brings you before the court for a serious offence.

“What sort of injuries do you think that will cause? Lads of your age do not appreciate the seriousness of being in possession of that type of weapon.

“You cannot go around with that sort of thing in your pocket.”

In mitigation Sarah Brady said Allen felt more confident carrying the cosh around with him.

She added: “He was not in any situation where he might have used it.”

Allen was due back in court today to be sentenced.
