Singer Lyn Snook may always have a song in her heart, but when she takes part in a concert on Saturday she’ll have a special reason for putting her heart into her song.

The event, featuring a showcase of musical talent from the students of city soprano and renowned singing teacher Luise Horrocks, will raise money for the Worcester branch of the National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease (NACC).

Lyn, who lives in Powick, near Worcester, is not only a pupil of Luise’s and has been part of the popular showcases since they were first staged 10 years ago, she is a dedicated volunteer for the charity, which funds research into Crohn’s and colitis diseases and is a founder member of the Worcester branch and its treasurer.

It’s an involvement she shares with her husband Roy who for five years headed the Worcester group as chairman.

“We run all sorts of events to raise awareness. Roy and I go up to the hospital once a month with information boards and hold regular fund-raising social events,” she said. “We’re a very busy group, but there’s not a great awareness of the charity in Worcester and we want to get it in the public eye.”

Crohn’s and colitis are forms of inflammatory bowel disease affecting about one in 400 people in the UK.

“They are very anti-social diseases. People don’t like to talk about bowels and guts. It’s so important to have a group like ours so people can chat to those with the same problems,” added Lyn.

“Although I’ve never been a sufferer, Roy had ulcerative colitis but now lives a normal life, thanks to surgery. We’ve been married for 36 years and have known each other for 38 and he had it when I first met him.”

Having sung since the age of 11, Lyn, now aged 60 and retired from her senior technician’s job in the science department of The Chase HIgh School, Malvern, devotes much of her time to her singing through her lessons with Luise and involvement with the Malvern Singers, the City of Birmingham Choir, Vocal Variations and her local church choir.

”I’ve never missed one of Luise’s showcase concerts and I thoroughly enjoy doing them,” she said. “I was overwhelmed when she said she would do this one for my charity. I love to sing but this concert will have an extra dimension to it.”

Baroque to Broadway, sponsored by Trinity Guildhall and Music 47, is due to take place in All Saints Church, Deansway, Worcester, on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6 (£4.50 concessions) and are available on the door. A donation will also be made to the All Saints Church Organ Fund.
