A HOMELESS man who smashed the window of a car with a wooden post and harassed his alcohol support worker has been given a community order to help with his drinking and mental health problems.

Christopher Berry was seen by two women pulling a piece of wood out of the ground before hitting the window of a parked car in Cherry Tree Walk, near the city centre.

Worcester magistrates were told heard how Berry also threatened one of the female witnesses by shouting: “I’m going to break you in half” during the incident on Wednesday, July 8.

When interviewed by police, Berry said he had been verbally abused by two men in the car and said he believed the vehicle had been stolen. Berry, aged 40, said he had no recollection of threatening the woman.

The court was also told how Berry had harassed his alcohol support worker by visiting her a number of times at her home in St John’s, Worcester, in April.

Sue Davis said one evening she returned home and noticed Berry standing behind her. Several days later the defendant was sat on the pavement outside her house, drinking alcohol and talking to himself. He was also seen talking to and pointing at someone who was not there.

Berry made no further contact until September, when he let himself into Ms Davis’ house.

When the defendant was approached he said: “This is my house. We are meant to be here, we are both ghosts.”

Mark Turnbull, defending, said his client had not threatened or used any violence against Ms Davis and had entered early guilty pleas to the charges. Berry had spent six weeks in custody before being sentenced.

Berry was given an 18-month community order with 18 months’ supervision and ordered to complete alcohol and mental health treatment programs.

He has also been ordered to live at a hostel in Worcester and is prohibited from contacting Ms Davis.

Passing sentence, chairman of the magistrates Mary Child said: “This is a very intensive order and is going to take a lot of hard work. It will give you a good result if you are committed to it.”
