GENEROUS golfers who have been affected by breast cancer have raised more than £4,000 to help create a new dedicated breast unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Ann Roberts, lady champion at Sapey Golf Club, Upper Sapey, Herefordshire, said members of the club had given generous donations and worked together to organise raffles, bring and buy sales and barbecues to raise £4,045.

The cheque will be presented at on Thursday (22) at Sapey Golf Club by club members to Steven Thrush, consultant surgeon at the Worcester hospital.

Ann Roberts said: “A couple of the ladies have had breast cancer. It’s one of those issues that is near the heart of every lady. We feel it is a very good appeal because, once the money is raised, the NHS will take over the running of the unit. I would like to thank all the ladies and for everyone who has supported the charity this year, either by buying raffle tickets or providing items for the raffle.”

The Worcester News-backed campaign aims to raise £2.5 million to pay for a dedicated breast unit which will form a one-stop shop for breast patients at 220 Newtown Road, set apart from the main hospital building.

The existing breast clinics are spread out across the hospital which increases waiting times for patients. The new building will give them more space and greater privacy in a less clinical and more comfortable environment.
