GARDENERS can help protect Worcestershire’s heritage by planting an organic county fruit tree.

Worcestershire County Council’s countryside service has long made local varieties of fruit trees available.

However, Worcestershire's once-famous orchards have dramatically reduced in number and as a result some local fruit varieties have become rare.

Councillor Derek Prodger, the county council's cabinet member for environment, said: "There are some great varieties of fruit trees in the county and it would be a shame if we lost any of them.

"As well as starting their own mini orchard, residents could also give the tree as a present, with Christmas not too far away, this would make a unique gift as it's not something you can buy for someone at a shopping centre."

Selections of organic apples, pears and plums are available to buy from £14.

The trees are grown in partnership with Walcott Organic Nursery and are available from November until February for planting in the winter season.
