WORCESTER’S Magic Whiteboard has been named the West Midlands’ most promising new business of the year.

It now goes through to compete for the national crown at this year’s British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Awards in London.

Founded two years ago by husband and wife team Neil and Laura Westwood, of Warndon Villages, Worcester, the stationery firm’s main brand is Magic Whiteboard, a unique product in roll-form that allows the user to create a portable whiteboard wherever they are within seconds. Its stockists now include include Ryman Stationery, Office Depot/Viking Direct, Staples and Eason’s in Ireland.

In 2008 the company appeared on popular television show Dragons’ Den which significantly boosted sales. Turnover is set to triple this year to £1.5 million. The concept won backing from four dragons and subsequently managing director Neil Westwood, a former manager at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, chose Theo Paphitis and Deborah Meaden as his business partners, securing £100,000 of investment.

The Chamber of Commerce judges were impressed with the company’s profit growth and commended it for its continued product innovation and forward planning.

John Dunsmure, managing director of the BCC, said: “Despite the difficult economic climate, businesses across the country are continuing to succeed, overcoming obstacles by adopting innovative ideas and motivating their people.

“This company is a great example of the very best of UK business and I wish the team at Magic Whiteboard success in the national finals.”

Neil Westwood was understandably pleased. “We are now Theo’s most successful investment,” he said.
