FABULOUS fireworks, sporting shenanigans and a wedding fair ensured children and adults had a fun-filled weekend in Worcestershire.

Organisers said they were overwhelmed with the success of the first St Peter’s Festival in Worcester and were already planning to make it bigger and better next year.

Bob Jenkins, festival committee member, said every event had been well attended and more than 1,000 people turned up to watch Saturday night’s fireworks display.

“It just shows there is a community at St Peter’s that’s alive and very good, strong and happy,” he said. “The festival has been brilliant. I am thrilled to bits.”

Among the highlights of the three-day event – which was backed by churches, schools, the parish council and drama group C&T Theatre – was a painting workshop, comedienne Jude Simpson and a puppet show. The event was due to be brought to a dramatic close last night with a lantern procession along St Peter’s Drive.

Youngsters and adults also had fun at a community sports day in Fernhill Heath on Saturday.

Despite the dreary weather, there was cricket, football, hockey and even judo on offer at the recreation ground.

The sports day, organised by Spa Housing Association and North Claines Parish Council, was aimed at getting residents in the area involved in healthy activities.

Meanwhile, at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, brides and grooms-to-be were busy picking out the perfect components for their big day. More than 100 exhibitors covering all aspects of matrimony showcased their services and offered expert advice to couples at yesterday’s I Will Wedding Fair. There were also two fashion shows displaying the top trends in wedding wear.

Organiser Carol Hinett said more than 300 people walked through the doors every hour. “The visitors and the exhibitors seem more than happy,” she said. “It has gone brilliantly.”

The event, previously organised by your Worcester News, part of Newsquest, was one of seven I Will exhibitions run by Newsquest, the producers of I Will magazine.
