YOUNG politicians from Worcestershire have helped make history in the House of Commons.

The youngsters travelled to Westminster and championed the causes that matter most to them in the House of Commons. UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) members Ario Bagheri and Alice Murphy, both 17, joined their peers and sat on the famous green benches at the special event on October 30 β€” the first time the chamber had been used by anyone other than MPs in its history.

More than 300 youth parliament members debated issues including free university education, youth crime and how to tackle it, free transport for the under 25s, job opportunities for young people and the possibility of lowering the voting age to 16.

The debate was organised by UKYP and supported locally by Worcestershire County Council's Youth Support team.

Alice Murphy, who attends Worcester Sixth Form College and represents West Worcestershire, said: β€œIt was a really enlightening experience to be with so many other young people interested in politics trying to help raise the issues that matter most to us.”
