Sir Ian tackles the bullies

ACTOR Sir Ian McKellen visited Hanley Castle High School, near Malvern, as part of this week’s Anti-Bullying week.

The visit was organised by Worcestershire County Council and Stonewall, one of the UK's most influential lesbian, gay, and bisexual rights groups, of which Sir Ian is a founding member.

The county council has signed up to Stonewall’s Education Champions programme, which aims to tackle homophobic bullying in schools and promote equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual youngsters.

During the visit Sir Ian worked with a group of theatre studies students and read an extract from Othello to English students. He also spoke about his work with Stonewall.

Assistant headteacher Annie Picthall, said: “It was a tremendous privilege for pupils at Hanley Castle to welcome Sir Ian to our school. His insight and experience into issues relating to acceptance and equality for gay people were warmly received as Sir Ian worked alongside pupils in practical exercises, participated in lively discussion and delivered two inspiring assemblies.”
