HIGH winds and torrential rain failed to put a damper on the spirits of the Worcestershire Bridleways and Riders Association on their Christmas treasure hunt.

Organiser Teresa Simkins said: “With very bad weather overnight and it was touch and go if the event – from Ockeridge to Wichenford – was to go ahead, but rest assured my brave and trusted riders all turned out in great force to support us.

“Early on Sunday morning, after doing my own horses, we set off to check over the route and make sure gates were accessible and get all the food etc ready from the start point.

“Riders started arriving from 9.30am onwards as the ride was optional fancy dress and we were amazed at how many had made the effort to dress up, despite high winds, and ride out in them, too.

It all looked very festive.”

All the riders booked in and had their copy of cryptic directions and clues to solve. Then, they slowly started off in small groups of two or threes.

Teresa said: “The seven-mile ride took hours to complete, but there were plenty of things to find. All the riders got back safely to the welcome sight of Lesley Welch and Claire Haslam, who were dishing out mulled wine and mince pies.

“About 20 riders took part, which was a fabulous turnout considering the weather. We were thrilled to bits and everyone commented on how much they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”

The winner of the fancy dress prize was Sue Hillier with Basil.

Joint treasure hunt winners were the teams of Carolyn Shakles and Sandra Norris and Jan Kenyon with Justine Lowe and Kay Newman.
