A teenager who lay in wait for another youth before attacking him outside a Worcester nightclub has escaped being locked up for Christmas.

Judge Daniel Pearce-Higgins QC imposed 26 weeks detention on Jacob Minnis but suspended it for 12 months.

He ordered him to do 150 hours unpaid work and banned him from licensed premises for 28 days.

Minnis, aged 19, of Norwich road, Worcester, pleaded guilty at Worcester Crown Court to assaultng Ross Wilkes causing him actual bodily harm.

The pair had exchanged abuse at Tramps nightclub on June 6 and Minnis was seen on CCTV waiting outside for his victim before punching him to the ground, said Kerry Moreton, prosecuting.

Mr Wilkes had two black eyes, bruising and swelling to his face and two chipped teeth.

He was knocked unconscious and had no recollection of the incident.

Mark Lister, defending, said the incident lasted only a few seconds and there had been no kicking or use of a weapon.

But the judge said it was a nasty assault with an element of premeditation.
