WHILE most of the region was covered in a blanket of snow during recent weeks, people in one Worcester street woke up yesterday to find their entire road covered with bubble wrap.

Cars, trees, lampposts and even wheelie bins were wrapped up in Somerville Road, Tolladine, to highlight it as one of the UK’s most accident-prone streets.

Research by Confused.com said motorists living in the road had made an average of 10 insurance claims per year over the past five years.

Yesterday’s stunt took 12 hours to complete and used 1,500 square metres of bubble wrap, which will now be donated to Oxfam for use in sending emergency supplies to Haiti.

Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at Confused.com said: “With the recent wintry conditions the number of accidents across the UK has shot up by 40 per cent.

"It is important to raise awareness of how dangerous it can be driving in those conditions, and to highlight the importance of having the right level of car insurance.

“The kids in the street were really enjoying walking on the bubbles on their way to school. One young girl said it was ‘bubbly wubbly’.”

Resident Lin Portlock, aged 58, a teaching assistant at Gorse Hill Primary School, said: “All of the kids from the school wanted me to come and take a picture to show them.

“It certainly brightened up a dull January morning.”

Paulina Trgova, 26, who also lives in the street, said workmen and confused.com staff had been camped in her house using it as their headquarters to edit videos and photographs.

“They have been using the bathroom and making cups of tea, I’ve almost been forced out of my home,” she said. “Luckily, it hasn’t been snowing or raining – but it’s still freezing cold.”
