Comer Women's Institute

THE first meeting of 2010 was an open meeting, but sadly visitors were few with only one brave gentleman sitting among an equally depleted number of women members.

However, Viv Jackman, president, gave a warm welcome to all, including our speaker for the evening, Ray Sturdy.

There were several apologies, one birthday and Viv confirmed the time and menu for Comer’s annual dinner at Spires restaurant.

Beryl Lord, secretary, put the minutes aside, but read a very lengthy list of correspondence.

The speaker’s topic for the evening was the 60s and Ray presented this in an interesting and amusing manner highlighting events with photographic slides.

This was a trip of pure nostalgia with much participation and laughter from the audience.

The 60s really started in 1945 with a baby boom following the austerity of the war years. A population of young, eager-for-change and expression. Out of this came an explosion with fashion, music, drugs, cars, politics, inventions, buildings and so on down memory lane.

As Ray questioned: “Were these really the good years?”

The evening ended with social time, refreshments and the raffle.

Next meeting will be February 17 at 7.30pm, St David’s Hall, Comer.

The speaker will be Dorothy Norman with Music And Me.

BERYL M LORD
