Charity raises awareness of first aid training

12:38pm Tuesday 2nd February 2010

A FIRST aid charity is launching its first ever national schools week.

The week, run by the St John Ambulance, will offer an opportunity for pupils who are members of the charity to share their work with their fellow classmates.

It also aims to raise awareness about the importance of first aid training in schools and the various volunteering opportunities available to young people. Jo Huck, St John Ambulance West Midlands schools liaison officer, said: “At St John Ambulance we believe that no one should suffer because of a lack of trained first aiders – and young people can be brilliant first aiders, if they are well trained.

“Unfortunately research has shown that most schoolchildren and teachers do not currently have the basic first aid and health and safety training to keep both themselves and those around them safe. We’re urging more schools to teach first aid and more pupils to join St John Ambulance to learn it with us direct.

“First aid can do more than save lives or care for a friend – it can change how people think about young people.

“It can also help pupils to understand the value of life and the importance of communication and teamwork, as well as boost self-esteem – and let’s not forget that learning first aid looks good on your CV. We hope that pupils taking part in National Schools Week can help spread these important messages and encourage others to want to participate.”
