AT the first meeting of the 2010 programme, members and guests of the monthly Greek interest club enjoyed a highly informative talk from guest speaker Marius Hadjiannis, Ottoman Empire historian from Birmingham University.
The theme of the talk was A Tuscan Attack On Cyprus. Marius recounted the events leading up to this significant historical event of 1607.
After the refreshments break, during which the monthly raffle was won by Kevin Carroll, a question and answer discussion was held to help further understand the misguided strategy of the Tuscans, who chose to invade the fortress at Famagusta from the sea with 2,200 soldiers and the promise of support from 6,000 Greek troops.
The next meeting of the club is on Thursday, February 25, when Kevin Carroll will recount his experiences over his 40 years of travelling to and around Greece.
The meeting will be held at the Worcester Golf and Country Club, Bransford Road, Worcester, starting at 7.30pm.
Anyone wishing to come along will be made most welcome.
Further details can be found at the club website wahc.org.uk or by contacting the chairman, Peter Reynolds on 01905 775991.
