THE cost of car parking in Malvern will be frozen for the third year running.
Members of the Conservative Administration Group agreed to maintain the price of one, two and four hourly car parking rates last week.
They also agreed to keep two-hour parking permits for residents at the same price of £15.
A proposal, revealed last week, for the two-hour permits, used by more than 4,000 residents, to go up to £50 - an increase of more than 200 per cent - was unanimously rejected by the group.
The idea had been suggested as part of the as part of Malvern Hills District Council’s forthcoming revenue and capital budgets for 2010-11 but will not now be put forward.
The freeze will be a boost for traders and the campaign to encourage more people to shop locally.
Phil Grove, the council’s leader, said: “Some expenditure cut backs will be inevitable, but the Conservative Administration is taking every possible measure to improve efficiencies and reduce overhead costs throughout the Malvern Hills District Council without cutting front line services.
“It is only right and responsible that elected members keep under review all aspects of MHDC activities to identify potential savings to enable us to maintain the excellent front line services provided and appreciated by all.”
The decision was made at a meeting of the group, which includes all Conservative members and two independent members, on Thursday, February 4.
A final decision on the revenue and capital budgets report will be made by full council on Tuesday, February 23.
