Which county businesses make you most welcome?

THE very best in fine food and good company will be honoured in this year’s Worcestershire Welcome Awards.

Once again, county people can vote for the restaurants, eateries and B&Bs they feel provide the quintessential county experience.

Awards organiser Destination Worcestershire is giving people between now and April to nominate venues who put blood, sweat and tears into making the county a must for visitors with taste.

All readers need do to nominate is see visitworcestershire.org and follow the links, fill in the postal voting form printed here, or text in their entries (see details below).

The winners of each category – newly expanded this year – will go forward to regional awards with a chance of going toe-to-toe with the best across the West Midlands.

The closing date for nominations is midnight on Friday, April 30. The three venues polling highest in each category will be judged by an independent panel who will decide the winner.

Winners will be announced in your Worcester News on Wednesday, June 30, and receive their awards at a ceremony at the Orchard Cafe, Worcester Countryside Centre, in the summer.

Last Year's winner: It's all about pride

THE key to success is pride in the produce, according to last year’s winners of the outstanding achievement award.

Felice and Fiorinda Tocchini, who are originally from Italy, are naturalised county culinary experts now, having run the popular Fusion Brasserie at Stoulton, between Worcester and Pershore, since 2004.

In 2009, they bagged the outstanding achievement award and top prize in the Eat and Drink category for their commitment to sourcing the best local produce from the county.

Following that success the couple are now planning to open a new café and bistro, spreading the message of fresh county-sourced produce even further.

Mrs Tocchini said: “We’re from Italy and our culture there was to cook what you could pick from your own garden, so to speak.

“We brought that with us.

“And at the end of the day it’s about having pride in what grows around you.

“It’s the little touches as well, the little details.

“We make our own butter and sprinkle a little rock salt on top just to make it a little different.”

With lamb and beef from Hillworth Farm Meats, Longdon, near Upton-upon-Severn, fruit juices from Pershore College and game that has been shot on estates dotted around the county, the menu at Fusion proves the owners practise what they preach.

Felice, who is head chef at the brasserie as well as its owner, is always in demand for his cooking skills and has made several trips to Worcestershire schools and colleges for demonstrations to pass on his know-how.

Mrs Tocchini said: “It’s important to support the producers around you, show what they can do.”

Let's hope they get a better service there then we did.

The Orchard Cafe
Last years winner of the Best Breakfast Award

Don't take too much from that. To be honest the worse breakfast I've ever had and expensive for what you get.

Breakfast came with half a sausage split lengthwise. Explanation from staff when I asked why half a sausage was that they had run out of normal breakfast sausages but this one was larger.

They honestly thought that by placing what looked like a half eaten leftover on the plate was good practise, when running short of sausages.

That’s sounds like an indignation Joe, where the heck are the sausage police when you need them. Im so outraged by this tale of woe word fail me.

Indignant and woe indeed. :)) Orchard Cafe were not interested at the time but it now returns to haunt them. If I could have I would have called the sausage police and the S.A.S.(Special Armed Sausages) to sort them out. How dare they ruin my breakfast. I would like to say there's many fine breakfasts to be had around the County but not the at Orchard Cafe which states it does.

Very true joe I had forgotten the S.A.S, I havnt been to the orchard café so cant comment, but Big daddys in st jonhs is great for a proper fry up, or if one is after a more refined breakfast experience visit time to eat in the hop market you wont be disappointed unless you arrive after 11:30 because they stop serving breakfast by then.

We could start our own best breakfast search I've used both the café's you mention and they are great. the Riverside Cafe in Stourport , the little cafe at Holt bridge and a special mention for the Riverside Cafe, Bewdley for their Sottish Breakfast these cafes deliver some of the best breakfasts to be had.

All this talk of breakfast Joe is making me hanker for a nice bacon sandwich. I to have tried the Scottish breakfast and agree it certainly a contender, and thankfully no sign of a battered mars bar to be found.

Joe the Tug, is that the one and only time you have eaten at The Orchard Cafe?? Perhaps you haven't given them a fair chance? I have eaten there on a regular basis and indeed have recommended the place to many other hungry people. Indeed the owners went out of their way to ensure one of the guests had exactly what they wanted.
They are always welcomming.
Perhaps, Joe, you just felt like having a "Tug" at someone today and chose them. Have no fear Orchard Cafe, you have loads of loyal customers, there will always be someone looking to put successful people down.

MrStJohns, they serve the most excellent bacon sarnie in the Little Ginger Pig in Copenhagen Street. I've put on several pounds since they opened and the Rabbi has been asking me why my jacket now fits so badly. Any thoughts on what I should tell him?

LadyKettleby "Perhaps you haven't given them a fair chance? " Just maybe they should have provided a full sausage and the service to go with it. "there will always be someone looking to put successful people down." Wrong if you check my other comments you will see that i will sing the praises of those who do deliver. As for the Orchard cafe not only did they fail to deliver they also failed to rectify the issue. As for having a "Tug" on the day and choosing them you are so wrong. They appeared in the article that day so it was an ideal time to voice my opinion on the matter. It is the one and only time I've eaten there. Maybe I should go back and have another half a sausage breakfast, I think not. It's your prerogative to recommend It's mine to give it a wide berth. I wonder what you would say if they had done it to you?
