Historic pub re-opens but it doesn’t sell beer

ONE of Worcester’s oldest pubs, which is regarded as having one of the best historical interiors in the country, has re-opened as a restaurant – which doesn’t sell beer.

The unique Victorian features of the Paul Pry in the Butts have been gathering dust for the past two years with no prospective tenants being successful in taking over the pub.

A Polish businessman has now turned the city centre venue into a day-time family-friendly restaurant which does not serve alcohol.

We reported previously in your Worcester News how the 200-year-old pub is on the Campaign for Real Ale’s (Camra) national inventory list for having “outstanding heritage interest”. Camra spokesman Bill Ottaway said it was a shame the grade two listed property was no longer serving beer.

He said: “We would prefer to see it operating as a pub because there is something special about its interior.

“But it is better to see the building being used rather than seeing its fantastic features becoming derelict and dilapidated.”

Mr Ottaway said CAMRA would like to see a change in planning regulations to stop pubs being changed to restaurants without planning permission.

“It is something we are concerned about,” he said.

“We need to be able to challenge these decisions and are lobbying the Government to get them to change the rules.

“The Little Sauce Factory was a pub, then it changed to a restaurant and now it is going to be turned into flats.

“We have got to do all we can to ensure our historical pubs remain intact.”

New manager Jaroslaw Karczewski said his menu will give customers something different to other city centre eateries.

The 34-year-old said: “It is something that Worcester has not seen before. It is a family-friendly restaurant with its own play area and baby changing facilities.

“The food is influenced by a range of different European cooking styles.”

The Paul Pry is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm.

Great news that a business is operating from the premises once again, I don’t really think its detrimental as long as he interior of the pub is kept no matter what the building is sued for, however I find it odd that its not serving beer as when I walked past on Saturday someone was most definitely doing a good impression of drinking a bottle of beer. How bizarre.

I live very close to the Paul Pry and I think it's a shame that there isn't a bar there. I quite liked the idea of slipping in there for a pint on my way back from work!

To be fair tulstar I think you may not be alone on that point, theres a heck of a lot of people live in that area, im sure the new owner of the restaurant may well come to realise that operating a restaurant with a bar facility would pay dividends. As sitting in a pub like the Paul pry without a fine pint is a crying shame. Hopefully someone will also do something good with the fiveways as that needs a good revamp.

MrStJohns - I've seen people in The Fiveways and I've heard rumours that it's being done out with a view to reopening... Which is nice!

Well well tulstar, that’s pretty good news, the fiveways is in a great location iv always been surprised that it hasn’t done well I guess lack of investment has been its downfall in recent times, well il certainly keep and eye on that then, hopefully itl get a good makeover in keeping with the building. Cheers for the info.

Just as long as the new owner doesn't apply for a license so that the CAMRA brigade can call in for their customary half pint of some obscure real ale served without any head or as flat as a f---t.
There are quite a few restaurants who don't sell alcohol, where the diners are allowed to take their own preferred drinks, not a bad idea and a lot cheaper, so as long as the host makes a living out of the food everybody wins.
