Burnt-out nightclub to be sold

THE charred remains of an old Worcester nightclub will soon be sold, according to the selling agents.

The former Zig Zag nightclub, Smokestack pub and an adjoining empty shop in St John’s, Worcester, have been boarded up since arsonists struck in August 2007.

The buildings were put up for sale by owners Sainsbury’s at the end of last year.

Up until 1959 the premises, opposite the junction with Bransford Road, housed St John’s cinema.

It had several names over the years, including Picasso’s, Tanya’s and Zig Zag, before it closed for good and was bought by Sainbury’s.

Now commercial property company Liggins Thomas has said that a sale is imminent. John Liggins said: “It hasn’t been sold yet, but the owners – Sainsbury’s – have had a number of proposals which they are currently considering.

“We anticipate that it will be sold shortly.”

The supermarket giant bought the empty buildings as part of its original plans to open a store in Swanpool Walk, but decided against using them.

The asking price has not been made public.

As long as its not going to b solely turned into houses then this is good news, hopefully some extra retail or maybe some sort of entertainment facility would be great.

This property will almost certainly be sold with a restrictive covenant preventing it from being used for retail purposes. No one will be allowed to compete with the almighty Sainsburys.

Ahhh Picasso’s, everytime I hear the opening keyboard from Step On it takes me right back.
We should build a shrine there, a shrine to my youth.
