Remembering the fallen

A WAR memorial for soldiers killed since the Second World War could move a step closer to reality today.

County councillor Alan Amos is meeting the three main political group leaders to further discuss the idea of a memorial and book of condolence based in County Hall.

We previously reported his idea for a memorial to Worcestershire soldiers, sailors and airmen who have died serving their country since the war in Iraq.

It is understood the memorial would now also commemorate those who have died in action since the Second World War.

Worcestershire has lost four soldiers in action in recent years; Private Robert Laws, of Bromsgrove; Lance Corporal Richard Brandon, of Kidderminster; Lance Corporal Richard Larkin, of Cookley, and Private Jason Williams, of Worcester.

“I take the view that if you’ve given your life, isn’t that worth something somewhere?” he said.

He believes the memorial should be in the reception area of Worcestershire County Council’s headquarters in Spetchley Road.

Your Worcester News reported how the Church of St George in Barbourne, Worcester, had raised the idea of creating a memorial to fallen city soldiers who have died in action since the Second World War.

ufering of the innocent people cought up another as america would say collaterall damage for what do not make the mistake of always being right let them fight there own battles they will ultimatly win its nothing to do with the rest of the word leave them alone they are innocent people triying to live a normal life its there choice not ours to be able to livewe live thousands of miles away from them who on earth gives us the right to tell them how to live there lives

You've missed the point completely here Robert. There are many memorials for wars up to the Second World War. This memorial is for those lost in conflicts since 1945, not just Iraq. Also the rights and wrongs of those conflicts is not what is being debated. Regardless of the reason these men and women need to be remembered.

And as for Alan Amos wanting the memorial at County Hall - NO NO NO NO NO!!!! That's not the right place - this should not be an excerise to allow councillors to pat themselves on the back and use it as an electioneering tool. As I've said before when this was first raised, it should ultimately be where the relatives want it, but certainly in a public ACCESSIBLE place like the Guildhall, or Gheluvelt park or part of the new riverside development.

CJH absolutely agree with you on this matter, put the memorial somewhere near the centre of Worcester. I would be interested to know exactly why Mr Amos believes that the memorial should be put in County Hall. Local people, families and visitors to the city would be able to view it if it was housed in one of the main city attractions.

Yes, I'd like to know as well. Perhaps Mr Amos would care to comment on this? We don't often get posts from councillors on here (well not under their own names anyway!).

Agree - needs to be where the public can see it - not stuck away at County Hall where there is no where to park if you did come and see it. Still there is the Park and Ride from Sixways!

I don't think we need one, but if people want it, then I agree with the above
