9/10 children get first choice school

MORE than 90 per cent of Worcestershire children will attend their chosen secondary schools in September.

The official school admission figures, released on Thursday, show that 5,581 Worcestershire pupils (91 per cent) will attend their first choice schools.

Furthermore 95 per cent of pupils who applied for Worcestershire schools have secured places - well above the average of 83 per cent.

A total of 264 (4.3 per cent) youngsters secured place at their second choice schools, while 84 (1.37 per cent) were allocated their third choice.

It is a slight improvement on last year when 90 per cent secured places at their first choice schools.

Councillor Liz Eyre, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for children and young people (12-19 years), said: "We have worked very hard to ensure as many parents as possible get their first choice of secondary school.

“I am so pleased to say we are steadily moving forward, improving marginally on last year’s figures, which were themselves excellent."

Nationally 83 per cent, approximately 476 680 youngsters, got their first-choice school.

The latest Department of Children, Schools and Families figures also revealed the number of online applications has risen from 30 per cent in 2009 to 43.6 per cent.

Primary school admission figures will be released at the end of next month.
