Tea party was a lovely way to mark hospice’s birthday

CHILDREN and volunteers started Acorns’ fifth birthday celebrations this weekend with a tea party.

Acorns children’s hospice on Bath Road, Worcester, held the tea party for five children who were using the hospice over the weekend and some of the staff who have been at the hospice since the beginning.

Saturday’s party was an early start to the birthday celebrations as yesterday marked the hospice's official fifth anniversary.

For the low-key event, a special home-made birthday cake was baked by one of the hospice volunteers, complete with the Acorns bear on top.

The bear is normally found on top of the collection tins and as a topiary design in the gardens of the hospice to greet everyone as they come through the gates.

The children also baked cookies helped by kitchen volunteer Sally Parsons, who has been with the hospice since it opened.

Ellen Snead, aged 11, baked a plate of her own cookies, which she shared with everyone at the party. She also won her first game of pass the parcel, bagging a pair of glittery fairy wings.

Dorothy and John Todd, from Stourport, who have been volunteering with the hospice since the very beginning, also enjoyed the party Sue Curry, head nurse at Acorns for the three counties, said: "It was a lovely start to our fifth birthday celebrations in Worcester, an afternoon tea party for the children and young people using the services over the weekend.

“Ellen made some lovely biscuits, and we had a beautiful lemon and orange flavour cake, with the Acorns bear sitting on top.

“We had some games of pass-the-parcel which Ellen won, and then we cut the cake and all tucked in to a slice, or two!

"Some of the older lads using the hospice arrived back in time for the cake cutting, they'd been out for the day at an exhibition giving a voice to young people living with disability.

“The cake was just what they needed after their day out, and was also enjoyed by the staff and volunteers working around the clock at the hospice over the weekend."

The hospice is also having an open day and fifth birthday fete on Sunday, April 25, when people are invited into the hospice to see inside and help fund-raise to support it.
