THE Mayor of Worcester visited a coffee morning in support of a dedicated breast unit for the city.
Councillor Andy Roberts visited St Wulstan’s church hall in Cranham Drive, Warndon, Worcester, on Saturday, March 6, for the Women’s Fellowship coffee morning in aid of the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign.
Jill Bottomer, fellowship chairman, expressed her thanks to the mayoral party for attending the event which raised £350 for the local charity.
The charity has been adopted by your Worcester News and donations have so far raised more than £300,000 towards the £2.5 million costs of the project to create a new unit at 220 Newtown Road at Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.
The new unit will be a one-stop shop for breast patients, some of whom may have cancer.
The existing breast care clinics are spread out throughout the main hospital, meaning diagnostic tests can take longer than patients and clinicians would like.
The hope is that the new unit will provide less clinical and more comfortable surroundings for patients, making their life far easier at what can be a difficult and stressful time for them and their families.
The new facilities will also better protect the privacy and dignity of patients.
The building itself has been given to the charity by the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust but the money would allow campaign leaders to convert the existing building into a fit-for-purpose breast unit with its own car park.
