COMMENT: Stop these yobs making life a misery

SO-CALLED anti-social behaviour has become one of the banes of modern life for decent, law-abiding people.

We say “so-called” because most anti-social behaviour is not name-calling, or loud music, or rude gestures. It is people committing criminal acts.

Residents of the Arboretum are the latest victims of these crimes.

Alleyways surrounding their houses have become focal points for young troublemakers.

Drug taking and wanton vandalism have plagued householders for months. Their garden walls are slowly being dismantled with bricks used to smash windows.

Now they have been told that repairing some of the damage caused by the yobs is their responsibility and they risk prosecution should someone be hurt by the aftermath of the vandalism, in particular if walls collapse.

That sounds like the perfect kick in the teeth to us.

Access rights mean the residents cannot block off the alleyways to stop the youths gathering yet they will be held liable if the worst happens as a result of the criminal behaviour of these thugs.

Police say they are aware of the problems and doing what they can to solve them.

We accept the police cannot be everywhere but we would hope to see an issue of this scale dealt with immediately.

If that means a blitz of enforcement or a curfew on youths in the area then so be it.

The victims of these criminal acts say they feel helpless. It is time they were helped to feel safe.

Having a local policing team working throughout the day and evening/night times would be the only long term solution. It was in place some years ago with a regular officer and specials but I've no idea what the system is now. There was a residents association in the Arboretum who would meet regularly which was very useful in getting problems brought to attention and addressed. Getting the community together and working with them, showing support, practical help and positive action would help sort this out. The yobs may find somewhere else to go but then get the same in place there, keep pushing them until they tire of this behaviour as they would have nowhere to go to do as they please.

Here I go again on my social soapbox, but come on people, isn't it really time that we, the public, demanded from those we vote into power, a return to a time when this type of behaviour will no longer be tolerated! We live in a society where crime, anti-social behaviour, and the like, is now the norm, and those who commit such crimes have very little to fear even if caught.
Lets demand the abolishion of community service and social reports on these criminals, and bring back harsh sentences for serious crime, and the building of more prisons. We have tried the softly, softly approach and it's failed.
Lets get rid of the 'Lets feel sorry for the drug takers', and deal with the dealers like they do in other countries.
With a general election approaching, why do the main partys seem confused with the lack of public interest in their policies? Non of them seem interested in dealing with a society that is failing those of us who just want to live decent lives.
