Incinerator plans prove to be a draw

MORE than 100 people visited a second public information exhibition about plans for an incinerator in Hartlebury.

Visitors to Eden House at Hartlebury trading estate were able to talk to planning and technical experts about the proposal for a 200,000 tonne energy-from-waste plant called EnviRecover.

If given the go ahead, the £120 million incinerator would take waste that could not be recycled from Herefordshire and Worcestershire and turn it into enough energy to power a town the size of Kidderminster.

John Plant, co-director of Mercia Waste Management, the company behind the plans, said: “It was really encouraging to see so many people taking an interest in our proposal with the majority being first-time visitors.

“Going out to consult early had always been Mercia’s intention and this has proved to be very successful in terms of reaching a wide audience directly with the facts.”

Initial results of Mercia’s assessments on visual impact, traffic, noise, odour, ecology and air quality were available at the exhibition.

The information will be published on the website envirecover.co.uk in due course.

The exhibition follows presentations to a community liaison group and key organisations and a visit to a reference plant.

A planning application is expected to be submitted in early April but many residents living nearby oppose the proposals.

hello, when i lived in wolverhampton we lived very close to incinerator, we didn't have any bad smells, only on twice a week, i think its good idea, better an incinerator than a rubbish tip any day.

Incineration is a costly and outdated technology that does nothing to save the planet.

By building this incinerator Worcestershire will be abandoning a waste diversion policy (i.e. recycling) due to its' contractual obligation to keep supplying a high capacity of waste to be burnt. The passing of this proposal will act as a block on investment in green alternatives for the next generation.

There are less expensive, more efficient and safer alternatives to incineration. Let's hope the planning committee at the County Council do their research and look beyond the "spin".
