EVESHAM firefighters are aiming to encourage more people to compost garden waste rather than starting potentially dangerous bonfires.

The town's officers have joined forces with Wychavon District Council to host a special open afternoon next Tuesday at the fire station in Merstow Green. Visitors will be able to talk to firefighters, council officials and environmental health officers about alternatives to burning waste.

Sub officer Mel Turbutt said: "Every year Evesham firefighters deal with a number of potentially serious fires caused by garden bonfires getting out of control. These fires cause damage to property and often lead to personal injury.

"Visitors to the open afternoon will be able to pick up vouchers offering a discount on purchasing compost bins. A selection of bins will be available on display. Further advice will also be available for those people who still wish to have a garden bonfire." The open afternoon runs from 2-5pm.
