Film audiences piled into venues in Herefordshire, Shropshire and Powys last weekend as the third Borderlines film festival got underway. And director David Gillam said he was delighted with the turnout.

Opening night saw the premiere of Malvern director Neil Oseman's low-budget fantasy adventure, Soul Searcher - filmed on location in Hereford. The sell-out crowd loved it, and though there may have been inconsistencies and too many fight scenes for this 36-year-old, you've got to admire him. It didn't feel like a movie made on a shoestring, which is a huge credit to this ambitious film-maker.

There's plenty yet to come: director Shona Auberbach introduces her enchanting Dear Frankie tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday sees the out-of-London launch for Bullet Boy - a powerful drama about growing up in urban Britain. There's also a second chance to see Deborah Koons Garcia's The Future of Food.

Check the website for details (www.borderlinesfilmfestival.co.uk) or drop into the Courtyard and pick up a brochure. The festival continues to March 30 in venues across Herefordshire, Powys and Shropshire.
