The Tights, the first band to be signed to Malvern's famed Cherry Red record label, are to be reunited after nearly 30 years.

The Malvern-based punk rock group were in their teens when Cherry Red promoters Iain McNay, Will Atkinson and Richard Jones decided to launch a record label to record their first single.

Bad Hearts was released in 1977, to acclaim from John Peel and the now defunct Record Mirror.

The single and follow-up, Howard Hughes, made a name for the four-piece group and for Cherry Red Records.

Now The Tights plan to reform for one night only, to play a gig at Drummond's Bar in Worcester.

Frontman Malcolm Orgee, now a garden designer, said: "It'll be a very special evening and I think it'll be very well attended.

"I was a little apprehensive to start with because I wasn't sure how appropriate it would be today, but the songs seem to be quite current.

"There's a lot of interest in music of the late 70s now, so I think it'll be good."

The band met as young music fans at the popular Cherry Red events in the Winter Gardens, as Malvern Theatres was then known.

They went on to play with bands including Dr Feelgood, Wire and The Skids and at venues such as the Marquee Club, in London, before splitting up towards the end of the 1970s.

"We recorded our first demo when I was 15 and moved to London when I was 17. I don't think I was prepared for that kind of life," said Malcolm.

"But I think we've all been involved in music in some shape or form since then and music is a great love of mine. I've got no regrets."

The reunion gig, on Sunday (December 19), will feature the band's hits as well as covers by their contemporaries, The Ramones and The Velvet Underground.

Support will come from the highly acclaimed Plastic Heroes.

The gig starts at 8pm. Tickets are £5 from Drummond's Bar.
