IT is hard to take seriously town councillors who, according to your leading article, December 2, consider the light pollution from the Tesco sign 'tremendous' and then in an adjoining article announce the launch of a competition for the best residential Christmas lights.
Apart from the dubious aesthetics of these displays there is also the consideration of nuisance to neighbours who choose not to decorate their house in such an ostentatious way. More importantly from an environment point of view, there will be excessive demand for electricity at a time of year when the provision of power is stretched to the limit, particularly if we are going to experience a hard winter as predicted.
